The Hateful Eight: Release moved to Jan. 1

The Hateful Eight will get a wide release a little earlier than expected. Originally set for a Jan. 8 rollout, Quentin Tarantino’s eighth movie has been moved up one week, to Jan. 1.

The film’s Twitter account posted about the shift shortly after the news was first reported by Deadline.

According to Deadline, Tarantino’s latest will still arrive on Christmas Day in 70mm film at 100 theaters. The debut marks the third time Tarantino has opened a feature on Dec. 25, following 1997’s Jackie Brown and 2012’s Django Unchained.

“I think everybody is looking to see how we do in that first two weeks,” Tarantino told Variety about the 70mm roadshow version of his film, which includes an opening overture and extended intermission (plus some additional footage). “But that’s also kind of exciting. I’m hoping that Hateful Eight does well enough that that becomes, for the filmmakers who care, the new premier way to launch their movie in an exclusive way.”
