Doctor Who: Peter Capaldi hints this could be his 'final year' on the series

Peter Capaldi was announced as Doctor Who‘s 12th Doctor in August 2013, but he might soon be saying goodbye to the role. The actor, who is set to return for another season, told Britain’s Telegraph this could be his last go.

“This could be my final year – it’s terrifying,” he told the Telegraph. “I love Doctor Who but it can be quite an insular world and I do want to do other things. There will come a time when this is over. But I knew that when I started. I was thinking about my regeneration scene from the outset. That’s my terrible melancholic nature. When you accept the job you know there’ll come a day, inevitably, when you’ll be saying goodbye.”

Capaldi recently appeared in the Doctor Who Christmas special, “The Husbands of River Song,” with Alex Kingston as River Song. The actress also discussed the possibility of contuning the show with a female Doctor with The Guardian, saying, “It’s difficult, I don’t know quite why, but I would imagine, if anything, the Doctor might be of a different race than a different gender.”

She continued, “I can’t imagine, myself, the Doctor being a different gender. I just think that too many men have played that role [already].”

At a press screening earlier this month, series showrunner Steven Moffat said “we’re already moving” on Doctor Who season 10 and teased “brilliant, prominent, and amazing writers” coming aboard.
