Last surviving 'Jaws' shark model is heading to the Academy Museum

The last surviving model of the shark featured in 1975’s Jaws is heading to Los Angeles’ Academy Museum, which is scheduled to open in 2017.

The 25-foot fiberglass model — nicknamed Bruce — is the fourth and last version made from the original mold, as the first three were made of latex and rubber and deteroriated soon after the film came out.

This one called Hollywood’s Universal Studios theme park home from 1975 until 1990, when it made the move to Adlen Brothers Auto Wrecking, a yard known for buying vehicles from Universal Studios. Now that the yard is closing though, owner Nathan Adlen has decided to give it a home worthy of its place in film history.

“I am delighted to be part of the new Academy Museum through the gift of this beloved American icon,” Adlen said in a statement. “Bruce caught the eye of my father, Sam Adlen, at first glance back in 1990, and for many years he’s been like a member of the family … This is going to be the perfect place to share this extraordinary treasure with the world.”
