Person of Interest is officially … in limbo. Again!

Despite executive producer J.J. Abrams saying last weekend that the procedural thriller was likely canceled, CBS’ new entertainment chief said Tuesday the show’s number is not quite up … yet.

“We ordered 13 episodes, we hope to get them on this spring,” CBS entertainment president Glenn Geller told reporters at the Television Critics Association’s press tour in Pasadena on Tuesday. “That’s what we’re targeting right now. [Showrunners Jonah Nolan and Greg Plageman] have planned a terrific season. Can’t wait for the fans of the show to see it. It’ll be a real treat for viewers.”

Yes, yes, but is season 5 the final season? “No, we haven’t aired the show yet. I’m not sure.”

But what about Abrams’ suggestion that the writers have written a finale that functions as a series ender?

“I think it could function as series and season finale,” Geller said.

Later, the executive confirmed more firmly that the show will definitely return sometime this spring. He also teased that fans should get excited about actress Sarah Shahi’s return. “You can look forward to it with great gusto. She’s amazing. I think Jonah and Greg would kill me if I said anything other than it’s fantastic.”

Person of Interest stars Jim Caviezel and Michael Emerson. Together, they use an advanced surveillance system known as “The Machine” in an attempt to prevent crimes before they happen. As they exact their special brand of vigilante justice, they attract the attention of the NYPD, who are used to investigate these persons of interest without their knowledge. The series also stars Kevin Chapman and Amy Acker; Taraji P. Henson was a regular until season 3.

Season 4 wrapped in May 2015; a premiere date for season 5 has not yet been set.
