The Deuce: HBO porn industry drama greenlit, will star James Franco, Maggie Gyllenhaal

The Wire creator David Simon is heading back to HBO for a new series about the legalization and rise of the porn industry in 1970s New York, the network announced Tuesday. The drama, titled The Deuce, will star James Franco and Maggie Gyllenhaal.

Simon will serve as an executive producer and writer alongside fellow The Wire alum George Pelecanos. They’ll share executive-producing duties with Franco, Nina Noble, Michelle MacLaren, and Richard Price, while Gyllenhaal and Marc Henry Johnson will produce.

The Deuce will join the upcoming Vinyl as HBO’s second drama set in ’70s New York. That show — produced by Martin Scorsese, Mick Jagger, and Terence Winter — follows a record label struggling to stay afloat as the music landscape goes through a major change. It premieres Feb. 14.

Franco and Gyllenhaal will star in The Deuce with Downton Abbey‘s Gary Carr, Revenge‘s Margarita Levieva, The Walking Dead‘s Lawrence Gilliard Jr., Show Me a Hero‘s Dominique Fishback, and The Leftovers‘ Emily Meade. HBO has not yet announced a premiere date.
