Thor: Ragnarok will be the Midnight Run of Marvel movies, says Mark Ruffalo

Marvel Studios has always been playful with genre. It’s how the sequel to Captain America: The First Avenger — a World War II adventure movie — became a political thriller, and how Ant-Man was a fun heist film. Now, according to Mark Ruffalo, the company is planning to take that freewheeling tradition one step further with Thor: Ragnarok.

“There’s a little bit of Midnight Run, with [Charles] Grodin and [Robert] De Niro,” the actor told Empire. “I feel like that’s kind of where we’re heading with this relationship between Thor and Banner.”

Now, Ruffalo admits that he hasn’t read a script yet — Stephany Folsom is writing the latest draft — but all of this is based on the conversations he’s had about the film. “It is a universal road movie — that’s where we’re heading,” he said. “It’s not where you’d think it will be, so it’s not your classic road movie but it has that structure, I think.”

The actor will appear as the Hulk alongside Chris Hemsworth in the third Thor movie, with Tom Hiddleston returning and Cate Blanchett joining the Marvel universe. Thor: Ragnarok, directed by Taika Waititi (What We Do in the Shadows), will open in theaters on Nov. 3, 2017.
