Sundance 2016: Amazon closing deal for 'Manchester by the Sea'

Amazon is nearing a deal to land domestic rights to Kenneth Lonergan’s Manchester by the Sea, which earned rave reviews following its world premiere Saturday at the Sundance Film Festival.

The deal would give the company both theatrical and streaming rights to the Casey Affleck-starring family drama, EW has learned. Amazon will partner with another studio as a co-distributor to release the film in theaters.

Trade reports place the deal at around $10 million.

Manchester by the Sea stars Affleck as a man who becomes the guardian of his teenaged nephew (Lucas Hedges) after the death of the boy’s father (Kyle Chandler). The film also stars Michelle Williams, Matthew Broderick, Gretchen Mol, and C.J. Wilson. It’s written and directed by Lonergan, who also penned and helmed You Can Count on Me and Margeret.

At Sundance, EW’s Chris Nashawaty called Manchester by the Sea “a mature, richly rewarding movie you’ll definitely want to check out when it hits theaters.”
