Comedy Bang! Bang! is nothing without host Scott Aukerman and his relationship to the IFC show’s band leader, and the newest musician filling that position will bring a weird flavor to the show.

Aukerman announced that “Weird Al” Yankovic will replace Kid Cudi as the IFC comedy’s band leader. The first 70 shows featured Reggie Watts, now band leader on The Late Late Show With James Corden, before Kid Cudi took on the mantle for the next 20 episodes. And now Yankovic will take over for the upcoming 20-episode season, which begins production today. Yankovic had previously appeared as a guest on both the TV show and podcast.

Aukerman made the announcement on the Comedy Bang! Bang! podcast, explaining that the making of Cudi’s new record and changes to his touring scheduled interferred with filming of the upcoming season.

“I contacted one person and one person only and said, ‘Look, I could put a mass email out there to every musician I know,’ ” Aukerman said on the podcast.

“For the next 300 episodes,” Yankovic joked about his commitment to the show’s run. “That was a weird contractual obligation, but I was happy to sign it.”

Listen to Aukerman make the announcement on the podcast below, which features Yankovic as a guest, as well as fellow guests Lauren Lapkus and Joe Wengert.
