'Grimm' midseason premiere: Bitsie Tulloch explains new character Eve

When Grimm season 4 ended, Juliette (Bitsie Tulloch) was dying in Nick's arms after being shot with arrows. And that explains why it was such a shock when she turned up to save the day in "Wesen Nacht", season 5's midseason finale.

Except it's not Juliette at all. After her death, her body was taken by a group known as Hadrian's Wall. They created "Eve," a powerful weapon in Juliette's body (with a platinum blonde wig).

EW caught up with Tulloch to get the scoop on her "new" character and what we can expect to see from Eve when season 5 returns.

ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: Can we assume Eve is a completely different character than Juliette, or do parts of Juliette still come through?

BITSIE TULLOCH: Juliette is effectively gone. Eve has Juliette's DNA and flesh and blood, but there is no emotional connection to the life that Juliette led. When she was kidnapped by Hadrian's Wall, obviously there were tranquilizer darts, because she's still alive. And Hadrian's Wall started putting two-and-two together that Juliette was an incredibly powerful Hexenbiest but didn't know how to rein it in and control it. So they almost have broken her into submission—into becoming a weapon for Hadrian's Wall. So, you're not going to see much of Juliette. This new character is very different. It's a little bit like Alias, a little bit like Nikita. She's a weapon, and when she's outside of the underground compound where she lives and sleeps, she has to go undercover because she's still in Portland.

It's really fun for me, too, because I get to wear completely different outfits. Juliette was always in flowy blouses and now I'm in skin-tight black leather and wigs.

Should we expect to feel some major superhero vibes from Eve?

I think that's the idea. You know, it's not so much like she's running around beating people up. She's basically so powerful and she's learned—one of the things Hadrian's Wall taught her—how to control her powers mentally. She can almost look at someone and their head would explode. She's incredibly powerful. But because of that, it's that much more important for Eve to be 100 percent in control of every situation as much as she can be, so she doesn't at any point regress into evil Juliette tendencies.

Is Eve being controlled by Hadrian's Wall, or does she have some level of free will?

She definitely has her own free will. She has a certain level of autonomy. Hadrian's Wall has broken her into submission, but she's the most powerful thing inside that building, technology included, and they know it. She's willing to work with them, because as she says to Nick in an upcoming episode, she found a reason to live. She was so out of control as Juliette; she was wreaking destruction everywhere and she could have killed Nick. So for her mentally to justify her existence, it's, "I have to work with Hadrian's Wall, and I need to help suppress the Black Claw wesen uprising."

So far on Grimm, we haven't had such a huge looming threat in the background, and Black Claw wants to basically eradicate the human race and have a world run by wesen. This is obviously a massive, massive threat, and Eve is one of the most powerful weapons in Hadrian's Wall's armory to help fight Black Claw.

Will Nick be trying to reach Juliette through Eve, or find solace in her?

I'm not sure. We typically work script to script and so far, for the most part, there's probably like half of a beat of [Eve] here and there where she's looking at Nick and you're wondering, "Is she thinking about him; is she longing for him; does she still love him?" But there's no answer that I have come across yet. Nothing other than that she knows she needs to protect Nick because Nick is an asset that can help Hadrian's Wall. It's not that she needs to protect Nick because she still loves him.

Any teaser you can give us about what's coming up for Eve in the next few episodes?

Honestly, she's often in the underground compound. She's often working with Trubel and Meisner. … This is definitely a slow reveal—this new character. She's going to be in the next episode but really just here and there, so you'll be wondering, "What the hell is she; what is she capable of; what's going on with her psychologically?"

There's an episode where there's your typical really bad guy, and he won't talk, and what Eve does to him to get him to talk is really terrifying. Even Trubel is like "holy crap, this person's just remarkably strong and powerful." Nothing can stop Eve if she's on a mission. She's going to get it done one way or the other.
