The Witch: Horror movie is a Puritan's nightmare, says director Robert Eggers

In case you needed further proof that The Witch is “a nightmare from the past,” look no further than this spine-tingling featurette for the upcoming horror film.

Starring Anya Taylor-Joy, Kate Dickie, and Ralph Ineson, The Witch sees an English farmer relocating his family to a plot of land at the edge of an ominous forest where they are plagued by a series of strange events.

“I wanted to create an archaetypal New England horror story,” director Robert Eggers said in the featurette. “If you could upload a Puritan’s nightmare into the audience’s brain, that’s what I was hoping people could experience.”

By watching this “modern horror story,” as the video calls it, Eggers hopes moviegoers walk out of the theater with questions. “These old fairy tales and folk tales were rich with mystery and enigma and depth.”

The Witch will hit theaters on Feb. 19.
