If you’ve ever watched ZZ Top’s videos and thought, “I’m sorry, but this just isn’t enough; I need more hot rods,” then Discovery may have a show for you.
ZZ Top frontman Billy Gibbons stars in a new pilot titled Rockin’ Roadsters, which Discovery, no stranger to bearded fellows, will air Feb. 29 at 10 p.m. The special — which could magically morph into a series, much like the nice young lady selling shoes in the “Legs” video turns into a miniskirted ’80s vixen — follows Gibbons and his non-quitting face hair on a mission to realize his hot rod dreams.
For this venture, the respected blues rock guitarist/singer (who, by the way, occasionally pops up as Angela’s dad on Bones) joins forces with an old buddy with whom he has created all sorts of crazy cars, hot rod master builder Jimmy Shine. With Gibbons as “the creative director” who locates the perfect rides to fix up and otherwise pimp, and Shine executing the vision, the two will try to transform a rusted 1984 El Camino into something menacing in time for a Hollywood event that’s in three weeks.
