Jason Segel, Robert Redford join Rooney Mara in 'The Discovery'

Jason Segel and Robert Redford have signed on to star in the afterlife romance, The Discovery.

Segel and Redford join Rooney Mara in Charlie McDowell’s sci-fi love story, set two years after the discovery of a scientifically proven afterlife. Segel will star as the son of the man (Redford) who confirmed the existence of life after death, and Mara, who first came aboard the project in October, will play Segel’s love interest with a tragic backstory.

Segel replaces Nicholas Hoult, who originally signed on with Mara but has since dropped out, reportedly due to scheduling conflicts.

The Discovery is McDowell’s second feature film, and he made his debut in 2014 with The One I Love, starring Mark Duplass and Elisabeth Moss.

McDowell wrote the script with Justin Lader. Verisimilitude’s Alex Orlovsky (Blue Valentine) and Endgame Entertainment’s James. D. Stern (Looper) are producing. Filming is set to begin in Rhode Island later this month.
