Kubo learns not to mess with the monkey in new Kubo and the Two Strings trailer

The titular Kubo is armed with more than his two-stringed shamisen on his journey to save his family. He’s also got a monkey voiced by Charlize Theron and a man-beetle brought to life by Matthew McConaughey at his side.

The new trailer for Kubo and the Two Strings lays out the path of Kubo’s quest as mysterious dark forces take over his home and his mother sends him on a journey to find his father’s lost armor.

Along the way, facing off against a number of ominous foes, Kubo also makes a few friends, including Monkey (Theron) and Beetle (McConaughey) in the latest stop-motion animated film from the studio behind The Boxtrolls and Caroline.

The film’s voice cast includes Game of Thrones‘ Art Parkinson as Kubo, Rooney Mara as the evil Sisters glimpsed in the trailer, Ralph Fiennes, George Takei, and more. Watch the newest trailer above for a lengthy look at the adventure that awaits Kubo and viewers when Kubo and the Two Strings opens in theaters on Aug. 19.
