Patriots Day: John Goodman joins Boston Marathon bombing movie

Patriots Day has found its police commissioner.

John Goodman will portray Ed Davis in the thriller about the 2013 Boston Marathon bombing and the citywide manhunt for the perpetrators, CBS and Lionsgate announced Friday.

The 10 Cloverfield Lane and Trumbo actor joins a cast including Boston native Mark Wahlberg, who is also producing the film, and J.K. Simmons of Whiplash fame. Peter Berg (Lone Survivor) is directing from a script by Matt Charman (Bridge of Spies), based on Davis’ account.

Davis, who served as commissioner of the Boston Police Department from October 2006 to November 2013, played a central role in working federal, state, and local authorities to respond to the attack that killed three and injured more than 260 in April 2013.

“Commissioner Davis is an American hero, and John Goodman brings the extraordinary combination of humility, gravitas and empathy to portray him,” Berg said in the announcement.

Patriots Day is scheduled to open in New York, Los Angeles, and Boston on Dec. 21 before going nationwide on Jan. 13, 2017.
