Sylvia Anderson dead: Thunder Birds co-creator, Lady Penelope, dies

Sylvia Anderson, the voice behind Thunderbirds character Lady Penelope and a co-creator of the children’s series, has died at the age of 88, her official website announced Wednesday.

According to the BBC, Anderson died in her Berkshire, England home. Anderson co-created the original Thunderbirds, the action-adventure television series from the 1960s that featured puppets as characters in the 2060s fighting to save lives as part of the International Rescue (IR) organization. Anderson created the series with her husband Gerry Anderson, who died in 2012.

In addition to producing and writing for the show, Anderson voiced the IR London agent Lady Penelope Creighton-Ward. Anderson also stepped back into the franchise for a guest spot in the recent revival series Thunderbirds Are Go. (Rosamund Pike took over the Lady Penelope role in this new series.)

Anderson worked on several other series, including Fireball XL5 and Joe 90, and in recent years had worked with HBO in the U.K. She also wrote a memoir, Yes M’Lady, which was updated to become the re-titled My Fab Years in 2007.
