Sarah Silverman joins Emma Stone in Battle of the Sexes

Sarah Silverman is the latest star to join the tennis biopic Battle of the Sexes, her reps confirm to EW.

The comedian joins Emma Stone and Steve Carell, who have been cast as the leads in the film about the landmark 1973 exhibition between Billie Jean King, then the No. 1 women’s tennis player in the world, and retired pro Bobby Riggs.

Silverman will play Gladys Heldman, who founded World Tennis Magazine in 1953 at 21 years old, four years before she began playing professional tennis herself. The late writer used her platform to promote women’s tennis pros and the game. She was inducted in the International Tennis Hall of Fame in 1979 and the International Jewish Sports Hall of Fame in 2000.

“Without Gladys, there wouldn’t be women’s professional tennis,” the Billie Jean King said in a statement after Heldman’s death in 2003.

Jonathan Faris and Valerie Dayton (Little Miss Sunshine) are directing, from a script written by Simon Beaufoy, of Slumdog Millionaire fame.
