Ben Affleck: Batman 'Oh, sh--' moment discussed

In Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, the Caped Crusader has choice words for Doomsday.

What’s left to say if you’re trying to distract a giant, rampaging, Kryptonian Frankenzilla that is destroying the city — and you actually succeed?

At one point, Ben Affleck’s hero uses his Batwing plane to capture the attention of Doomsday as the massive monster unleashes its fury. When the creature gives chase, Batman lures him to a deserted dock. (BvS often explicitly states that the fights are taking place in abandoned settings — an acknowledgement that fans were irritated by the death and destruction in the climax of 2013’s Man of Steel.)

The Batwing ends up getting hit by the monster and crashes. Batman opens the hatch and is relieved to see Doomsday leaving the city — but now the behemoth is coming towards him.

“Oh, sh–,” Batman says.

Asked if there was much debate about whether the hero vigilante should curse, Affleck tells EW it actually wasn’t in the script for the Zack Snyder film.

“I just improv’d that. I had a feeling that it would work and that it would be funny,” the actor says. “I improvised and I talked to Zack about it and I think this will really work because you don’t expect it — and because it’s Batman, and at that moment he is so incredibly overmatched.”

Affleck thought the line actually humanized the character. “We’ve taken these characters and are treating them more and more realistically,” he says. “It seems very realistic that he would say that at that point.”

The actor isn’t worried about degrading the morals of younger viewers with mild profanity.

“Any kid has heard their father say that if he’s trying to hammer a nail and hammers his thumb by accident,” he says. “I think that, unfortunately, all kids are plenty exposed to that particular expression.”
