iZombie WonderCon 2016 panel: 5 best moments

The iZombie cast and creators took the stage at the opening day of WonderCon and dished on stuff that any TV show would: brains and the undead. Rose McIver, Malcolm Goodwin, Rahul Kohli, Robert Buckley, David Anders, Aly Michalka, and executive producers Rob Thomas and Diane Ruggiero-Wright spoke at the panel in Los Angeles on Friday, moderated by Entertainment Weekly‘s senior West Coast editor Danielle Nussbaum. Here are our five favorite moments.

The taste of the brains is predictably gross

Made of Japanese gelatin, the gray matter doesn’t provide the most enjoyable eating experience. “It’s pretty disgusting. It’s like rubber gelatin-tasting stuff,” McIver reveals. “But it’s what you hide it in that’s better or worse.” One time, the noggin was made into clams casino. McIver is also a big fan of hot sauce. “If it tastes bad enough — the raw material — then I’ll put more hot sauce in there.”

Speaking of brain consumption: When an audience member asked whose brains they’d eat and why, Thomas joked that he’d eat his cohort Ruggiero-Wright’s brain, “So I wouldn’t have to keep sharing story credit.”

Rules of zombie sex are simpler than you’d think

The big question, after Liv and Major’s briefly rekindled romance and Peyton and Blaine’s tryst: Is zombie-ism an STD? Ruggiero-Wright’s view on the how and when humans can know the deader species in a more intimate fashion: “It’s very clear that when zombie-ism is dormant, you can freely have sex — with protection — with whomever you like,” she said. “It’s in the book, guys.”

McIver is totally into a musical episode

Thomas’ old show, Veronica Mars, was known for its killer music moments. The iZombie lead would love to take things a step further. “I’ve been wanting that since Day 1,” she insisted. “I did Xena when I was little, and they did a musical episode on that, and I was like, ‘That’s so fun.'” Thomas is (jokingly) skeptical one of his actors had the pipes to carry a whole episode: “Robert Buckley, in an older episode, sings from a famous Broadway musical, and that’s when our dreams of doing a musical episode died.” Still craving some iZombie singing? Thomas says that they had to cut a scene of Ravi and Liv duetting on “Mammas Don’t Let Your Babies Grow Up to be Cowboys,” but it will show up on the DVD extras!

Everyone has their own favorite scene

• Thomas loved Mr. Boss taking Blaine to his death: “It was everything I wanted it to be.”
• Buckley dug the club scene that featured Ravi and Major high on utopium. “All that sweat was real; poor extras were just getting sweat on.”
• Goodwin enjoyed a line of McIver’s that was cut during “Zombie Bro.” “When [McIver’s] looking at the pictures of the girls,” he explains, “she has to go, ‘That ass, though!’ We couldn’t stop saying that for weeks!”
• From the same episode, McIver picked a different moment: singing her own take on “Everybody” by the Backstreet Boys; it didn’t make the final cut.
• Kohli loved the fight in the morgue with Blaine. (So did we.)
• Michalka picked a moment from next week’s episode, when Peyton follows Liv around she consumes a stripper brain. “It’s nice to see that there’s a genuine connection as friends,” Michalka explains. And apparently thing get intimate: McIver adds she also gives Michalka a lapdance.
• Though hesitant when first reading the scene, Anders loved singing “Danny Boy” in the buff.
• Ruggiero-Wright picked the touching moment when between Major and Liv, when she’s in the caution tape dress on the bathroom floor.

Season 2’s finale is “huge”

If fans thought the season 1 conclusion was crazy, Thomas promises a crazier final act this time around (and he promises they’ll definitely be revisiting the Utopium boat party). “This year’s season finale is huge. It dwarfs last year’s season finale and is an action-packed episode,” Thomas said, who just finished a cut for the episode. “Most of the season 2 questions are answered, and we even tee up what we’re going to be dealing with in season 3 in the final scene.”

iZombie airs Tuesdays at 9 p.m. ET on The CW. The two-part finale airs back-to-back on April 12.
