Me Before You trailer saddest moments

Even if you haven’t read Jojo Moyes’ romantic novel Me Before You, your heartstrings most likely were tugged Monday morning when an extended trailer for the movie adaptation, starring Game of Thrones’ Emilia Clarke and The Hunger Games’ Sam Claflin, hit the web. You don’t have to deny it — we were right there with you. Many of the scenes may have been in that first trailer, but it didn’t matter. This is going to be a Notebook-level weeper and there’s no avoiding the tears.

Because we’re gluttons for punishment on this dreary Monday, we felt the need to relive the nine most heart-wrenching moments between caregiver Lou (Clarke) and her charge, Will (Claflin), over and over and over again, GIF-style. (Hey, at least you can’t hear Ed Sheeran’s melodic “Photograph” as you look.)

9. Will’s accident

Here’s a punch in the gut for you. In this new footage, we see what happened to Will before he was paralyzed. He’s sleek, in a hurry, and in the middle of closing what seems to be a big deal. And then, boom.

8. The girl in the red dress

What woman hasn’t wanted to see a man look at her like this? Of course, Lou and Will’s date to the orchestra is made even more bittersweet at the end of the night, when the pair is sitting in the car at Will’s house and he says, “I don’t want to go in yet. I just want to be a man who’s been to a concert with a girl in a red dress a few minutes more.”

Few things are more depressing than a person saying they’re happy when they’re clearly not. Will sees through Lou’s insistence at contentment and gives it to her straight: “You only get one life. It’s actually your duty to live it as fully as possible.” And thus sets up the biggest theme for the film.

6. The first smile

We’ve seen intimate shaving moments in movies before, but this one comes with our first glimpse at grumpy Will’s incredible dimples when he actually breaks a smile.

5. Something good

When Will asks Lou to tell him something good, she pulls a random tidbit out of her bag of memories. “When I was little, my favorite outfit was bumble bee tights,” she declares, clearly hoping to amuse her charge. “Black and yellow stripes.” Of course, we can guess where this will lead…

4. A gift for Lou

Don’t act like you didn’t see this coming. Still, when Will gives Lou her bumblebee tights, her happy dance brings us tears of joy.

3. That awkward dinner

This marks the first time we’ve seen grown-up and buff Harry Potter alum Matthew Lewis, who plays Lou’s lame boyfriend Patrick, but he’s not exactly a charmer when he questions Will’s ability to improve. The horrified cringe on Lou’s face is priceless.
