Downsizing: Kristen Wiig replaces Reese Witherspoon in Alexander Payne film

Kristen Wiig is in and Reese Witherspoon is out for director Alexander Payne’s Lilliputian tale Downsizing.

EW can confirm that Wiig will now play the film’s female lead, reuniting her with The Martian costar Matt Damon, after Witherspoon had to exit over scheduling issues.

Not much is known about the plot, other than it centers on an Omaha man (Damon) who takes part in the new trend of people shrinking themselves down and moving to tiny communities. Christoph Waltz and Hong Chau will costar.

Payne, who last directed Nebraska, wrote Downsizing with his frequent collaborator Jim Taylor (Election, About Schmidt, Sideways). Paramount Pictures has yet to announce a release date for the film.

Wiig is best known for her comedy work, including Saturday Night Live and Bridesmaids, but she has also branched out into dramatic fare such as The Skeleton Twins and Welcome to Me. She’ll next be seen in Sony’s Ghostbusters reboot.

Deadline first reported Wiig’s replacing Witherspoon.
