Woody Allen film Café Society to open Cannes Film Festival

Woody Allen’s latest film is heading to Cannes.

Café Society will open the 69th Cannes Film Festival on May 11 in an out-of-competition slot, organizers announced Tuesday.

The film stars Kristen Stewart and Jesse Eisenberg as part of a cast that also includes Blake Lively, Parker Posey, and Steve Carell. According to the festival, it tells the story of a young man “who arrives in Hollywood during the 1930s hoping to work in the film industry, falls in love, and finds himself swept up in the vibrant café society that defined the spirit of the age.”

Allen has previously opened Cannes twice, in 2002 with Hollywood Ending and in 2014 with Midnight in Paris. Café Society will be his 14th film to screen out of competition at the festival, from Manhattan in 1979 to last year’s Irrational Man.

His stars aren’t strangers to Cannes, either. Eisenberg’s film Louder than Bombs screened at the festival in 2015, and Stewart most recently attended in 2014 for the film Clouds of Sils Maria.

Mars Films will debut Café Society in French theaters on May 11, the same day it screens at the Cannes Film Festival. In the U.S., the film was acquired by Amazon Studios and will get a theatrical release later this year.

The 69th Cannes Film Festival runs May 11-22.
