After Bryan Singer’s X-Men: Apocalypse debuts this May, fans can look forward to New Mutants from Josh Boone (The Fault in Our Stars). While producer Simon Kinberg teased the young adult vibe of this standalone comic book film, he also confirmed that there will be a few recognizable characters popping up.

“Traditionally, the New Mutants have some characters that cross over from the mainline X-Men movies,” Kinberg told IGN. “As we are going, I would say it’s likely that you will see some familiar faces.”

Negasonic Teenage Warhead (Brianna Hildebrand) seems ripe for speculation. Though the character isn’t confirmed for anything beyond her role in Deadpool, the film saw her sporting a yellow, New Mutants-esque costume. The comics centered on this team at the Xavier Institute too young to become X-Men but old enough to start training.

“Josh Boone and his writing partner [Knate Gwaltney] are working on the script,” Kinberg continued. “They’re doing a really nice job of it, and it’s a really cool one, because in many ways, like, Deadpool was so different from the mainline X-Men movies, New Mutants… It’s maybe not as different as Deadpool, but it has its own unique, original voice to it.”

Sources familiar with the project told EW it’ll be based on the 1980s comic book run for a “John Hughes meets Stephen King” vibe, and Kinberg said the film is chasing the young-adult crowd.

“That’s the fun for me, working in the X-Men universe, creating these sort of standalone movies that have a different vibe to them. And New Mutants has more of a YA vibe to it.”
