Following the tragic death of her boyfriend, Blindspot‘s go-to puzzle master Patterson (Ashley Johnson) has numbed the pain with work, but she’ll face David’s untimely demise head-on during Monday’s episode.

“As we know, Patterson has obviously been dealing with the death of her boyfriend,” Johnson tells EW. “Prior to him getting killed, he had made a crossword puzzle saying that he has another clue for Patterson, but it comes out after his death, so it seems like he’s back from the dead, but he’s not unfortunately. Patterson finds this clue in the crossword and it leads her on an adventure to find another clue from one of the tattoos and takes her into a place that’s maybe not very safe.”

Though danger lies ahead, Patterson also may be able to finally move on. “In some ways, it does bring her closure with David and she’s able to finally say goodbye in as much of a way that you can when someone passes away like that,” Johnson says. “You wouldn’t just get over it right away, but you have to find some type of closure to be able to move on and be OK in your every day life. She does find that.”

With that said, viewers have noticed the growing relationship between Patterson and Borden (Ukweli Roach), the FBI psychiatrist who helped her in the wake of David’s death. “There’s a little bit of flirtation there and a respect for each other since they’re both kind of in the same line of work,” Johnson says. “Borden is adorable, so probably every woman in the office has a crush on him. We’ll see. If anything were to happen, it would be so far down the line. Patterson is still going to be dealing with David’s death for many seasons to come. I think it’s going to be a while, but there are possibilities there.”

Those possibilities will come along sooner than you may think. “In future episodes, the two of us work on a case together and are able to explore hanging out together just the two of us,” Johnson teases.

Blindspot airs Mondays at 10 p.m. ET on NBC. Check out an exclusive sneak peek:
