David Chase on 'Sopranos' prequel: 'I think I'll never do it'

Maybe stop believing in any kind of prequel to The Sopranos.

Speaking to Deadline.com, show creator David Chase threw cold water on the idea that he could make a prequel to the iconic HBO series.

“I’ve had people talk to me about that. I’ve had conversations with some movie studios that want to do it as a film. So far I’ve rejected the idea but I certainly wouldn’t do it as a television show,” Chase said. “I’m always disinclined to say, ‘No I’ll never do it.’ But I think I’ll never do it. I’m disinclined to say that because I don’t want my thinking to be constrained. I’ve said it from the beginning: If I had a really good idea and I thought it could be really entertaining and it wouldn’t upset what was done I might do it. But so far…”

Chase has discussed the idea of a Sopranos prequel before, first teasing the prequel possibility in 2012. “It would be with Tony’s father, and Uncle Junior, and Livia — Tony’s mother long before any of the other characters we know now,” Chase told Showbiz411 that year.

Talk of more Sopranos resurfaced again in 2014. “A lot of people have talked to me about it, and frankly I still flirt with the idea sometimes. But if I had a really great way to do it, I would do maybe a prequel,” he told The Daily Beast. “Somebody gave me a book about Newark in the 1920s about gangsters in Newark. That kind of interests me but not enough that I would have done it.”

Speaking to the New York Daily News in 2014, Chase again mused about what the show could look like. “Even if I did it, it wouldn’t be The Sopranos that was on the air — obviously at least one person is gone that we would need,” he said, referencing star James Gandolfini, who died in 2013. “There are a couple of eras that would be interesting for me to talk about, about Newark, New Jersey. One would be late ‘60s, early ‘70s, about all the racial animosity, or the beginning, the really true beginning of the flood of drugs.”
