Noah Baumbach's Brian De Palma documentary trailer

Brian De Palma has spent the last 50 years bringing audiences to suspense with his movies, and now fellow filmmakers Noah Baumbach and Jake Paltrow are turning the cameras around, focusing on the iconic director’s Hollywood legacy in the new trailer for their documentary De Palma.

Described as a “lively, illuminating, and unexpectedly moving documentary” in its official synopsis, De Palma explores the director’s early days as a maverick helmer of films like Carrie and Dressed to Kill to the ups and downs of his later career as a veteran influencer of the craft. The documentary centers on an intimate conversation between Baumbach, Paltrow, and De Palma, as the man behind Scarface describes the difficulty of working with a difficult industry ego while acknowledging his visual and narrative style hasn’t always rubbed audiences (and critics) the right way.

“What we did in our generation will never be duplicated,” De Palma says in the trailer, referencing Martin Scorsese and Francis Ford Coppola as his like-minded peers. “We’re battling a very difficult system, and all the values of that system are the opposite of what goes into making original, good movies. The problem of working in the Hollywood System is that you can lose your way.”

De Palma hasn’t directed a narrative feature since 2012’s Passion, starring Noomi Rapace and Rachel McAdams.
