History Channel is giving Roots an updated look, as evidenced by an exclusive teaser for the forthcoming remake of the seminal 1976 miniseries about slavery. The brief, 30-second sneak peek shows flashes of the new cast, including Laurence Fishburne and Anika Noni Rose, ending on Malachi Kirby introducing himself as protagonist Kunta Kinte.

Forty years ago, LeVar Burton originated the role of Kunta Kinte — a young, West African man taken captive by slave traders and sold in North America. Burton told EW that although so much time has passed since the original Roots miniseries aired, its message is still important.

“The vestiges of slavery and its legacy — which is racism — are alive and well in our culture,” Burton said. “We must confront it in order to defeat it.”

Roots will air two-hour installments every night for four days, beginning on Monday, May 30 and ending on Thursday, June 2. The specials will air at 9 p.m. ET on History, A&E, and Lifetime. Learn more about the remake on its official website.
