Michael Lombardo, HBO’s programming president, told EW that “the women are rocking this season” of Game of Thrones, a sentiment that was later echoed by Nikolaj Coster-Waldau. The show’s Jaime Lannister guested on Stephen Colbert’s The Late Show and further praised the talents of Emilia Clarke, Lena Headey, Gwendoline Christie, and more.

“The women on the show are amazing,” he said, pointing to his on-screen sister Cersei Lannister (Headey), Brienne of Tarth (Christie), and Lady Olenna (Diana Rigg). “They’re very, very strong, powerful women as women are. They’re not just the wife applauding her husband. They’re taking control.”

Elsewhere on The Late Show, Waldau joined Colbert in a spoof of the famous “Red Wedding” episode of the series called “The Red Rehearsal.” Naturally, it featured the death of Waldau’s favorite character. Watch it below.

Game of Thrones season 6 premieres on HBO this Sunday, and Lombardo further teased to EW that the female characters “power this season.”

“It’s organic to the storytelling, yet a radical shift,” he continued. “It’s the women that are the hope that we’re watching as the chess pieces move this season, and it’s very exciting.”
