'Captain America: Civil War' crosses $200 million domestically in just five days

Captain America: Civil War may focus on the showdown between Team Cap and Team Iron Man, but if box office receipts are any indication, the real winner in this fight is Disney and Marvel.

After just five days of domestic release, Civil War crossed the $200 million mark on Tuesday, bringing its North American total to an estimated $206.2 million. As a result, the clash between Captain America and Iron Man has already surpassed the entire domestic run of other Marvel Cinematic Universe films like Thor, Ant-Man, and Captain America: The First Avenger.

That also means that Civil War is the fifth-fastest movie to cross $200 million, tied with The Dark Knight, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2, and Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen. (Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Jurassic World, and The Avengers hold the record with three days, while Age of Ultron hit $200 million in four.)

Globally, Civil War boasts a total of $737.8 million — which means it’s already made more than Captain America: The Winter Soldier made during its entire worldwide run.

So far, Civil War’s box office trajectory is roughly on par with what Avengers: Age of Ultron did last year. (Both opened on the first weekend in May, and both earned an A CinemaScore, suggesting positive word-of-mouth and long legs.) Age of Ultron had the bigger domestic weekend opening, earning $191.3 million to Civil War’s $179.1 million, but Civil War has been gaining ground this week: On Tuesday, it earned an estimated $13.7 million domestically, while Age of Ultron only earned $13.1 million on its first Tuesday.

Plus, Civil War is only the latest success in a string of Disney box office hits. The studio has had a banner year thanks to Zootopia ($328.4 million domestically) and The Jungle Book ($289.1 million domestically), and as a result, Disney crossed $1 billion in domestic box office receipts in just 128 days, shattering the record set last year by Universal (165 days).
