With the role of a twangy Deputy U.S. Marshal in True Grit under his belt, Jeff Bridges returns to the dust bowl in the new trailer for Hell or High Water, a Texas-set crime thriller directed by David Mackenzie (Asylum).

Chris Pine and Ben Foster costar as a brotherly pair who rob a series of banks as a last-ditch attempt to save their family’s farm, but their actions come with (seemingly violent) consequences: a ruthless West Texas Ranger (Bridges) pursues the duo with a cutthroat desire to bring them down.

Taylor Sheridan, who wrote the Oscar-nominated 2015 film Sicario, penned the screenplay for Hell or High Water, which appeared under the name Comancheria on the 2012 Black List compilation of best unproduced scripts.

The film will screen as part of the ongoing 2016 Cannes Film Festival’s Un Certain Regard section, which often highlights more original, alternative works than those in the main competition. Mackenzie’s previous feature film, Starred Up, earned positive notices as it made the festival rounds, including stops at TIFF, Telluride, and Tribeca between 2013 and 2014.

CBS Films will release Mackenzie’s latest directorial effort on Aug. 2. Watch the new trailer for Hell or High Water in the video above, and see the film’s theatrical poster, below.
