In 1966, comedy legends Carol Burnett and Lucille Ball wasted no time proving themselves as a good team: They were playing off of each other before they even shared a stage.

“I would like to present a woman who has dazzled the world with her charm and talent, who has conquered every phase of show business, who is the first lady of television, and who wrote this introduction,” Burnett says as she welcomes her guest in this exclusive clip from the comedy special.

The year before The Carol Burnett Show‘s 1967 debut, CBS promised Burnett her own special, provided that she could deliver a major star. Burnett called Ball, and the duo joined forces with Broadway’s Zero Mostel for Carol + 2, an hour of comedy sketches and musical numbers that offered a look at what was to come for Burnett. In the exclusive sketch below, Burnett took on the role of a new mother whose baby ran interference on Ball’s travel plans.

The complete special is available on the new DVD Carol + 2: The Original Queens of Comedy. The DVD also includes the 1972 CBS television movie version of Once Upon a Mattress, in which Burnett reprised her 1959 Tony-nominated Broadway debut role. Accepting her lifetime achievement award at the 2016 SAG Awards, Burnett recalled her first meeting with Ball backstage at an Off Broadway performance of the show.

“And just as she was leaving,” Burnett remembered, “she said, ‘Kid, if you ever need me for anything, give me a call.’”

Check out these two exclusive clips of the comedy legends’ collaboration. And if you can’t get enough of Burnett’s brand of comedy, head over to iTunes, where, for the first time ever, The Best of the Carol Burnett Show has been made available digitally.
