'Captain America: Civil War' becomes the first $1 billion movie of 2016

As of Thursday, Captain America: Civil War has raked in $314 million domestically and $677 million internationally for a global total of $991 million. That means the battle between Team Cap and Team Iron Man will cross the global billion-dollar mark some time on Friday, becoming the first film to do so in 2016.

Civil War is only the 25th film in box office history to hit that milestone (and it’s Disney’s 10th movie to do so). Anthony and Joe Russo’s superhero clash joins The Avengers ($1.52 billion), Avengers Age of Ultron ($1.4 billion), and Iron Man 3 ($1.22 billion) as the other Marvel Cinematic Universe movies to reach $1 billion.

The Civil War milestone comes after just 24 days of global release, tying Age of Ultron for the eighth fastest movie to hit $1 billion. Star Wars: The Force Awakens set the all-time record just a few months ago, reaching $1 billion worldwide after only 12 days in theaters.

Civil War is projected to add another $40 million or so to its domestic total this weekend, facing off against new releases The Angry Birds Movie and Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising. Read EW’s full box office preview for the weekend here.
