Amazon: Matt Bomer and Lauren Ambrose star in pilots

Amazon’s unique pilot season involves the streaming service putting up the first episode of new, original shows, and either picking up or nixing the projects based on customer feedback. The process scored Amazon critical darlings such as Transparent and Mozart in the Jungle, and perhaps one (or both) of its two new original pilots will follow in those footsteps.

Both The Interestings and The Last Tycoon are hourlong dramas adapted from novels and set in the past, but that seems to be where the similarities end. The Interestings stars Lauren Ambrose as Jules Jacobson, a witty young actress who may not be as talented as her friends. The role sounds somewhat similar to Ambrose’s sarcastic art school teenager role from Six Feet Under. Adapted from Meg Wolitzer’s 2013 novel of the same name, The Interestings will focus on a group of artsy teens whose friendships are tested while at summer camp in 1974. Along with Ambrose, the series will star David Krumholtz (Numb3rs), Jessica Paré (Mad Men), Matt Barr (Sleepy Hollow), Gabriel Ebert (Ricki and the Flash), Jessica Collins (Rubicon), and Corey Cott (Public Morals).

The Last Tycoon is an adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s unfinished novel of the same name, which follows a battle between 1930s Hollywood golden boy Monroe Stahr and his boss and father figure Pat Brady over control of their production studio. Matt Bomer will star as Monroe, and Kelsey Grammer will play Pat. Additionally, Lily Collins (The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones) will play Cecelia Brady — presumably as Pat Brady’s daughter.

Both of these pilots will be available for Amazon Prime members to stream on June 17. Six new children’s show pilots will be available to stream on June 17 as well: Sigmund and the Sea Monsters featuring David Arquette, mixed media series Little Big Awesome, Zoë Kravitz starrer Morris and the Cow, animated comedy Toasty Tales, stop-motion The Curious Kitty and Friends, and the music-focused Jazz Duck.
