Lin-Manuel Miranda musical In The Heights movie headed up by Weinstein Co.

It’s not going to be quiet uptown when Hollywood moves into Washington Heights. The Weinstein Co. is developing a cinematic adaptation of Hamilton‘s Lin-Manuel Miranda’s breakout musical In The Heights, according to the man himself.

“When it rains it pours. When it movies it double movies. Heights is back on,” Miranda tweeted. “[Quiara Alegría Hudes’s] new screenplay is great!”

Universal was developing an adaptation of the Tony Award-winning musical, but pumped the brakes on the project in 2011, not going through with High School Musical director Kenny Ortega’s effort, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Marc Klein (Serendipity) wrote the Ortega-era script, but according to Miranda, In The Heights book writer Hudes returned to pen the new screenplay.

Debuting on Broadway in 2008, In The Heights tracked a bevy of characters in the New York City neighborhood. A bodega owner (Miranda in the original Broadway version) comes into a fortune and struggles with his feelings about leaving the city and shutting down his shop to move to his homeland of the Dominican Republic with his grandma. The musical won four Tonys, including Best Musical.

Stage producer Scott Sanders (Evita, The Color Purple) and his production company are involved in the project. “It’s been nearly 10 years since In the Heights opened on Broadway, revealing, for the first time, Lin Manuel’s ground-breaking artistry to the theater world,” Sanders said. “I’m thrilled to be working with Lin and Harvey to share with audiences that same authentic sound and story from the Broadway stage to the big screen.”

As for Miranda’s “double movies” nod in his tweet, the mind behind the smash success Hamilton was referring to the news earlier Tuesday that he would co-star in Mary Poppins Returns with Emily Blunt in the title role, due for Christmas 2018. Whether Miranda will star in In The Heights is currently unclear.
