Orlando gay nightclub massacre: Celebrity reactions

Following a deadly shooting early Sunday morning that claimed at least 50 lives at a gay nightclub in Orlando, Florida, celebrities like Lady Gaga, Queen Latifah, Ellen Page, and Julianne Moore expressed their condolences for the victims while also pushing for social and political change in a series of posts on social media.

President Barack Obama also addressed the nation from the White House on Sunday afternoon, calling the event an “act of terror and act of hate.” He added: “This is an especially heartbreaking day for our friends who are lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgender.” The attack comes amid a number of gay pride celebrations set to take place around the country this weekend.

Sunday’s Tony Awards ceremony, scheduled to begin at 8 p.m. ET on CBS, has also been dedicated to the victims of the massacre, which stands as the worst mass shooting in U.S. history. In addition to those killed, 53 people were injured when the alleged shooter, 29-year-old Omar Mateen of Ft. Pierce, Florida, entered gay nightclub Pulse at around 2 a.m. ET and opened fire on the crowd using an assault rifle and handgun moments after allegedly dialing 911 and pledging allegiance to ISIS.
