With Sunday’s debut of a grim new trailer, the dark, mysterious layers of HBO’s The Night Of are slowly coming to light.

The new trailer, set to a chilling, string-based score, sets the stage for what looks to be a gritty eight-episode journey through the anatomy of a bloody murder. “It looks like I killed her, I know that,” a man says in voiceover as cold scenes of a spacious, empty house fill the frame. Another voice chimes in: “That’s how it looks, but it’s not that simple, is it?” The clip then cuts to a series of dreary images, including red-stained sheets, a dead body, a gloved hand ringing a dirty doorbell, and a cotton swab wiping blood from the eye of a taxidermied horse.

The Night Of reportedly will chronicle the investigation of the supposed murder, including courtroom dealings and the accused killer’s purgatory on Riker’s Island.

The limited series originally began as a passion project for actor James Gandolfini. The late Sopranos star was originally set to topline the project, inspired by the 2008 BBC series Criminal Justice, as an attorney who bites off more than he can chew when he becomes embroiled in a case involving a Pakistani man (Riz Ahmed) accused of killing a woman in New York City’s Upper West Side. Following Gandolfini’s death, Golden Globe-nominee John Turturro (Quiz Show) took over the lead role.

Oscar-winning writer Steve Zaillian (Schindler’s List) co-created the series with Oscar-nominee Richard Price (The Color of Money) and directed several episodes. In addition, Academy Award-winning director James Marsh (Man on Wire) has helmed episodes of the series, which lists Gandolfini and Peter Moffat, who created the original Criminal Justice series, among its executive producers.

The Night Of premieres July 10 at 9 p.m. ET on HBO. Watch the new trailer above.
