'Ugly Betty' made Adele famous, and here's how

“We made Adele famous,” America Ferrera joked Saturday night during the Ugly Betty reunion panel at ATX Television Festival.

It’s a bold statement, but it’s not entirely false either. The singer appeared on the ABC show on May 14, 2009, just a few months after picking up her Grammy for Best New Artist. And we have the actress herself to thank for that appearance as well.

“That was me. That was America,” Ferrera said. “I had her album, 19, and, anyway, she was on SNL the night Sarah Palin was on SNL, remember? I went and I was like singing every word to songs that people didn’t know and some guy’s like, ‘Do you want to go meet her?’ And I was like, ‘I’m going to die.'”

Not unlike they did in the episode (watch a clip here), the pair of rising stars found they had much in common: Adele was an Ugly Betty fan. “I was like, ‘Come be on our show!’ And she was like, ‘I would love to!’ And then she came and did our show,” Ferrera recalled.

And the rest is history. Watch above
