Morris from America trailer: Sundance smash stars Craig Robinson

Described by critics as the “respite audiences need” from the lack of diversity in the film industry, Morris from America captivated audiences in January at the 2016 Sundance Film Festival, and now A24 has premiered a brand new trailer for the upcoming music-themed comedy.

The film stars Markees Christmas in the titular role, a 13-year old boy coming of age as an American living in Germany, where he aims to follow his dreams of becoming a rapper amid Europe’s prominent EDM-focused music scene. Craig Robinson (This Is the End, Hot Tub Time Machine 2) co-stars as Morris’ father, who moves his family across the pond from Richmond, New York, following the death of his wife.

The comedic trailer sees Morris practicing his German, his rap skills, and attempting to smoke a cigarette, which he coughs on as a friend describes him as a “gangster rapper.” In addition to Robinson and Christmas, the film stars Carla Juri, Lina Keller, and Jakub Gierszal.

Morris from America premiered earlier this year in competition at Sundance in Park City, Utah, where Robinson won the Special Jury Prize for his performance. Hartigan also won the festival’s Waldo Salt Screenwriting Award, while the film itself was additionally nominated for the Grand Jury Prize in the drama category.

A24, the distributor behind recent Oscar-winning films like Room and Amy, is set to release Morris from America exclusively to DirecTV on July 7. The film opens theatrically in select cities on Aug. 19. Watch the full trailer for the film in the video above.
