A star is found.

EW can confirm that pop diva Lady Gaga is in negotiations to star opposite Bradley Cooper in his directorial debut, a long-gestating remake of the showbiz drama A Star Is Born.

The story of a fading, self-destructive movie star who helps a young ingénue make it big in Hollywood, A Star Is Born originated as a 1937 film directed by William Wellman and starring Fredric March and Janet Gaynor. The tale has already been remade twice, with George Cukor directing Judy Garland and James Mason in a 1954 musical and Frank Pierson making a rock-tinged version with Kris Kristofferson and Barbra Streisand in 1976.

Warner Bros. has been looking to breathe new life into the property for years, with several big names linked at various times. Clint Eastwood was previously attached to direct, and prior candidates for leading man included Will Smith, Tom Cruise, and Russell Crowe. Before Gaga, fellow pop star Beyoncé Knowles was eyed for the female lead.

Although best known for her music, Gaga has been branching out in acting. Most notably, she won a Golden Globe portraying the Countess on season 5 of American Horror Story.

Deadline first reported the news about A Star Is Born.
