Amy Schumer: Gun violence sketch released after Orlando shooting

As the dust begins to settle around Orlando’s mass shooting, celebrities are ramping up their calls for stricter gun control in America. Now, Amy Schumer has shared an Inside Amy Schumer sketch that skewers the country’s inaction toward the cause.

The clip puts a bleak spin on law firm TV commercials, featuring takes from an array of fictional gun violence victims who unsuccessfully attempted to take their cases to court. “Have you ever been injured in a mass shooting or other gun crime? Do you want justice?” comedian Jon Benjamin opens. “Hi, I’m Toby Shrak of the law firm of Shrak and Murphy, but don’t call me, because there’s nothing I can do.”

The sketch was originally cut from the Comedy Central series’ “Welcome to the Gun Show” episode for time, but Schumer felt it carried new weight in the wake of the Orlando, Florida gay nightclub attack that left 49 dead and 53 injured, making it the deadliest mass shooting in U.S. history.

In particular, Schumer tied the sketch’s release to the country’s senate, who on Monday rejected four gun control measures that would expand background checks and keep firearms out of the hands of suspected terrorists. Critics have since set their sights on the November election as they push for stricter legislation.

“I am sickened by the cowardice of these people who are supposed to lead us,” Schumer told Politico. “Their dedication seems to be only to dollar signs for their own pockets. In November, we will remember who stood with the gun lobby, rather than their constituents, as we mourned for Orlando.”

A longtime supporter of gun control, Schumer first spoke out about the cause last August, after a gunman opened fire in a Louisiana theater screening her movie, Trainwreck.

“Unless something is done and done soon, dangerous people will continue to get their hands on guns,” she said at the time. “The critics scoff and say, ‘Well, there’s no way to stop crazy people from doing crazy things,’ but they’re wrong. There is a way to stop them. Preventing dangerous people from getting guns is very possible. We have common-sense solutions.”
