Daniel Radcliffe: Why Harry Potter actor won't be sneaking into new play

Where’s an invisibility cloak when you need one?

Daniel Radcliffe couldn’t be more excited to see Harry Potter and the Cursed Child when it hits the stage, but as he explained to PEOPLE and Entertainment Weekly editorial director Jess Cagle, getting into a theater unnoticed would take a bit of magic.

Asked if he thinks it would be weird for him to see the upcoming play, the Swiss Army Man star said, “It would be, but I don’t think actually because of the show. I think more because of the audience that will be sitting in it. I think that would be a very intense and possibly not relaxing experience for me.”

While he’s “intrigued” by the play, which finds Harry Potter as a middle-aged father of three, Radcliffe said he will probably have to wait awhile before he buys tickets. “I really do want to know what the show’s like and what it’s about ’cause I’ve heard it’s great. To be honest, it seems like it’s going to run for years and years, so after the initial wave of Harry Potter fans has been in and gone maybe I’ll sneak in.”

The conflict is so serious Radcliffe said he’s even considered going incognito, as Cagle and some of his friends have suggested. “Everyone says that — everyone thinks a disguise would work but it really doesn’t,” he said with a laugh. “I’m not going to put prosthetics on … and a hat and sunglasses is never quite enough. It’s a harder thing than you’d think.”

Harry Potter and the Cursed Child opens at London’s Palace Theatre on July 30, and Radcliffe’s new film, Swiss Army Man, is in theaters now.
