Fun Home cast to perform benefit concert in Orlando

The Fun Home is being uprooted and going on a trip down south. The cast of the Tony-winning Broadway musical will be performing selections from their show later this month in Orlando, to benefit those affected by the gay nightclub shooting there last month.

The one-night-only benefit concert will take place on July 24, and free seats will be given to those directly affected by the shooting and their families. It will be held at Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts, just up the street from Pulse nightclub, where the mass shooting took place.

The idea for the benefit concert came from Michael Cerveris, who stars as the father, Bruce, in Fun Home.

"We're not coming down to try to make a point or impose anything in any way. This is kind of what our show does all the time," Cerveris told the AP. "We're just going to go and tell Alison's story and hope that it provides some entertainment and distraction but also a place for some of the grief to go."

Adapted from the autobiographical graphic novel by cartoonist Alison Bechdel, Fun Home deals largely with LGBT issues and the importance of acceptance, both of one's self and others. The benefit is the most recent showing of support by Broadway for those affected by the Orlando shooting. Shortly after the massacre occurred, a significant portion of The Tony Awards was dedicated to addressing the tragedy, and members of the Broadway community later released a song with proceeds benefitting the GLBT Community Center of Central Florida.
