Saturday Night Live writer Chris Kelly used his own life as inspiration for his feature film directorial debut, Other People. It’s the story about a struggling gay comedy writer moving back home with his parents, while his mom battles cancer and his dad refuses to accept his sexuality. Following the film’s buzz-worthy premiere at the Sundance Film Festival, the Other People trailer has arrived to preview the emotional drama that ensues.

Breaking Bad vet Jesse Plemons and Molly Shannon headline the film, the latter being a former SNL-er herself. Bradley Whitford, Zach Woods, and June Squibb also feature.

Kelly, who also wrote the script, told IndieWire during Sundance, “My mom passed away in September 2009 and I wrote the first draft of this in the summer of 2012. It didn’t just happen and instantly I was like, ‘I’m going to write a movie about this.’ It was when I decided I wanted to try to write a feature. I wanted to write something I felt I could do in a truthful way.”

Other People is scheduled to close out Los Angeles’ LGBT film festival OUTFEST on July 17 before hitting theaters on Sept. 9.
