Law & Order: True Crime receives series order at NBC

NBC is throwing its hat into the true crime miniseries game. The peacock network picked up Law & Order: True Crime —The Menendez Murders , exceutive produced by Dick Wolf, for an eight-episode first season, EW has confirmed.

The series will focus on the trial of the Menendez Brothers. In 1996, Lyle and Erik Menendez were sentenced to life in prison without a parole for murdering their parents when they were just 21 and 18 years old, respectively. They were tried separately and eventually convicted in a third trial after hung juries rendered no verdicts in the first two trials.

The show will be written and executive-produced by Law & Order veteran René Balcer. “René and I have been working together over the past three decades, and he is one of a handful of truly great showrunners with whom I’ve worked,” said Wolf in a statement. “Law & Order won the Emmy for Outstanding Drama Series under his watch.”

Law & Order: True Crime is another addition in the current boom of true crime series. Most recently, FX’s The People v. O.J. Simpson was met with rave reviews and received 22 Emmy nominations.

This will be the sixth Wolf-produced series currently on NBC. The other five shows are Chicago P.D., Chicago Fire, Chicago Med, Chicago Justice, and, of course, Law & Order: SVU.
