Sia scores first No. 1 single with 'Cheap Thrills'

The biggest song in the country now belongs to an artist who rarely shows her face.

Fresh off a captivating set at the Panorama music festival in New York City, Sia has claimed her first No. 1 single on the Billboard Hot 100 chart with “Cheap Thrills.”

The tropical club-banger’s rise to the top of the charts wasn’t exactly unexpected. Industry experts had considered it a dark horse Song of the Summer candidate after Justin Timberlake and Drake dominated the first half of the season with “Can’t Stop the Feeling!” and “One Dance,” respectively. “That [song] just hit the top 10, it’s gaining in airplay, and it’s got those reggae vibes,” Gary Trust, associate director of charts/radio at Billboard, told EW earlier this month. “You could have a big lead the whole way, but if somebody catches up to you, it can totally change.”

In an EW Song of the Summer roundtable, the Chainsmokers also predicted big things for that song: “This will be one of the biggest songs of the summer,” Alex Pall, one half of the duo, said in May. “We’ll keep throwing it into our sets, but it’s not quite there in the U.S. I’m really pumped for it to blow up here.”

The song, originally written for Rihanna, is the latest single from January’s This Is Acting, which featured rejected songs Sia had composed for the likes of Adele and Shakira. It’s also the first time a woman over 40 has scored a No. 1 single in 16 years—the last was Madonna’s “Music” in 2000.

This fall, Sia will embark on a rare tour—her first in five years—in support of the album with special guest Maddie Ziegler, the star of many of Sia’s music videos, and opening acts Miguel and AlunaGeorge. The “Nostalgic for the Present” tour kicks off Sept. 29 in Seattle and wraps Nov. 6 in Austin. On Monday, an Oct. 25 date at Brooklyn’s Barclays Center was also added to the list of stops.
