Shonda Rhimes blasts Bill O'Reilly's comments on Michelle Obama's speech

Shonda Rhimes slammed Bill O’Reilly on Wednesday after the Fox News host made controversial comments about First Lady Michelle Obama’s widely-praised speech at the Democratic National Convention this week.

Rhimes called out O’Reilly for his remarks on the portion of the first lady’s speech that mentioned slavery and how far the nation has come.

“The idiocy never ceases to amaze me,” Rhimes said. “Try slavery, Bill. Let us know how good the food is while you wear chains.”

In a follow-up tweet, the showrunner wrote, “Bill: Chat about cuisine after they steal ur name, homeland, family then beat u, breed u and make u work for free.”

“I wake up every morning in a house that was built by slaves,” Obama said Monday while endorsing Hillary Clinton. “And I watch my daughters, two beautiful, intelligent, black young women playing with their dogs on the White House lawn.”

On his Fox News show Tuesday, O’Reilly explained that he wanted to review the “fascinating” history noted in the speech, which he said referred to the “evolution of America in a positive way.”

“Slaves that worked there were well-fed and had decent lodgings provided by the government, which stopped hiring slave labor in 1802,” O’Reilly said. “However, the feds did not forbid subcontractors from using slave labor. So, Michelle Obama is essentially correct in citing slaves as builders of the White House, but there were others working as well.”

O’Reilly addressed the controversy via Twitter on Wednesday afternoon, writing, “Far left loons distort tip about @FLOTUS statement that slaves built White House. She’s correct & I provided facts. More on The Factor -BO’R.”

Rhimes isn’t the only star to use social media to defend Obama’s speech. Audra McDonald — who has appeared on Rhimes’ ABC shows Grey’s Anatomy and Private Practice — also weighed in with a series of tweets.

“Dear Bill O’Reilly…endure some of these…,” she tweeted of a photo showing a slave whose back had severe whipping scars.

Kelly Clarkson has also applauded Obama’s speech. Earlier this week, a fan replied to a tweet in which the singer praised the first lady’s speech.

“I’m not sure I liked the part where she said the White House was built by slaves,” read the Twitter user’s response, which has since been deleted.

Clarkson replied, “Pretty certain the slaves that built it didn’t like it either..”
