Ava DuVernay's Queen Sugar renewed for second season at OWN

Ahead of its series premiere, the Oprah Winfrey Network has renewed its new original series Queen Sugar for a second season, EW has confirmed.

The series, based on the novel by Natalie Baszile, was created by Selma director Ava DuVernay, with Oprah Winfrey as executive producer. The first season premiere airs Tuesday, Sept. 6, with a second showing on Wednesday, Sept. 7 at 10 p.m. ET/PT on OWN. Season 1 contains 13 episodes, and 16 episodes have been ordered for season 2.

“When we saw the first cut from Ava we knew right away that we wanted a second season,” stated president of OWN Erik Logan in a statement. “We think viewers are going to connect with the deeply layered characters and powerful story and are excited to be able to share with them Ava’s director’s cut on premiere night without interruption.”

The first trailer offered a glimpse at the lives and loves of the estranged Bordelon siblings in Saint Josephine, Louisiana. DuVernay has already created buzz around the show by promising diversity; each episode is helmed by an independent female director.

Queen Sugar will regularly air Wednesday nights at 10 p.m. ET/PT on OWN after its two-night premiere.
