HBO: Mark, Jay Duplass anthology comedy gets series order

HBO is staying in the Duplass business.

The network announced Thursday it has ordered an anthology comedy series titled Room 104 from Mark and Jay Duplass, the filmmaking brothers. The new series, which will debut in 2017, is set in a single room of an average American hotel, and each episode follows a different story of the various characters who pass through the room.

“We’ve all seen stories set in seedy motels and high-class international resorts, but for years we’ve been fascinated by the funny, weird, sad, scary, absurd things going down in that corporate chain hotel near the airport,” the brothers shared in a statement. “That’s what Room 104 is after… finding some magic in the seemingly mundane.”

Casey Bloys, the recently-appointed president of HBO programming added, “Jay and Mark Duplass are two of the most inventive talents in TV today. We’re excited to see what they do with this unique concept.”

The brothers will serve as showrunners on Room 104, which is just the latest Duplass project at HBO. They are executive producers on the animated adult series Animals, set to return in 2017, and their critically acclaimed comedy Togetherness recently ended a two-season run on the network.
