Man in the High Castle reveals new season 2 photos, scoop

Inadvertently or not, Amazon spilled a number of details about Man in the High Castle‘s second season at the Television Critics Association’s press tour on Sunday.

Ahead of a panel featuring series stars Luke Kleintank, Alexa Davalos, Rufus Sewell, Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa, Joel de la Fuente, and Rupert Evans plus executive producers Isa Hackett and David Zucker, the streamer provided press materials that included a rundown of the new season, as well as character catch-ups that were quite enlightening. First off, here’s a rundown on what season 2 will bring:

Among the highlights from the character teases included the reveal of where Tagomi ended up in the season 1 finale. He “traveled to our world’s version of 1962, where Japan and Germany lost WWII,” according to Amazon. “As Tagomi attempts to make sense of his experience, he discovers connections between the two worlds that he never expected.” It’s true, Tagomi did leave this world. “It wasn’t a dream if that’s what you’re asking,” Hackett said.

In a sneak peek of season 2 shown ahead of the panel, Juliana (Davalos) heads to the Greater Reich embassy in San Francisco with the Kempeitai hot on her heels. She tells the Nazis she’s an ally of Joe (Kleintank) and needs asylum. “She’s no longer safe,” Davalos told EW after the panel. “She’s wanted by just about everybody. She’s seeking asylum in the only place she can. Whether that be a good choice or not, that’s happening.”

In another clip, John (Sewell) assures his wife Helen (Chelah Horsdal) that he won’t let the Reich kill their sick son. “It’s quite a big storyline,” Hackett said, adding that we’ll see much more of Helen this season. “He will go to extraordinary lengths. Because he’s so brilliant and he’s so clever, he’ll figure out some very, very clever ways of how to save his son. Because of the euthanasia laws, if he’s discovered to have this, his son is dead. There’s a lot of drama playing around that with family secrets.”

As for the source material from Philip K. Dick on which the series is based, “There’s quite a bit to draw yet,” Hackett said. “One of the things that we will get into which we didn’t last season is meeting the Man in the High Castle. That’s a big piece of a character that we didn’t get to last season.” (Could this be him?) We’ll also likely find out where the videos that are being delivered to the Man in the High Castle are coming from. “It’s a discovery process,” Zucker added.

Also revealed in the press materials is that Frank (Evans) will be joining the resistance this year. He’s “becoming radicalized in a way, which is a very different, huge departure from season 1,” Evans said.

Elsewhere, Joe lands in Germany, where he’ll meet new love interest Nicole Dormer (Bella Heathcote), a German socialite who exposes Joe to the wonders of the Reich. “That relationship starts to build via his father,” Kleintank said. “It’s romantic in a way, but he also needs someone because he’s lost. He gravitates toward her because he’s searching for something.”

Man in the High Castle‘s second season debuts Dec. 16 on Prime Video.
