Scarface: Antoine Fuqua in talks to direct remake

Say hello to the new Scarface director.

Antoine Fuqua is in negotiations to helm Universal Pictures’ reimagining of the classic gangster tale, EW has confirmed.

A filmmaker known for gritty thrillers such as Training Day and The Equalizer, Fuqua would direct from a script most recently worked on by Straight Outta Compton writer Jonathan Herman. Previous drafts were penned by Paul Attanasio (Donnie Brasco) and David Ayer (Suicide Squad).

The project represents the third big-screen incarnation of Scarface, following Howard Hawks and Richard Rosson’s 1932 drama about an Al Capone-like mobster and Brian De Palma’s 1983 version starring Al Pacino as a Cuban refugee turned Miami drug kingpin. The reimagining is set in contemporary Los Angeles.

The new film is being produced by Marc Shmuger of Global Produce; Scott Stuber and Dylan Clark of Bluegrass Films; and Marty Bregman, who produced the 1983 Scarface.

Fuqua’s most recently released film was the boxing drama Southpaw, and his next offering is a reboot of The Magnificent Seven, opening next month.
