The Intervention: Alia Shawkat, Ben Schwartz make an awkward entrance in exclusive clip

Marriage isn’t always smooth sailing — especially with overbearing friends breathing down your neck. Clea DuVall, star of films like Argo, The Faculty, and Girl, Interrupted, explores how three well-meaning couples attempt to re-route the trajectory of one of their companion’s tumultuous union in her feature directorial debut, The Intervention, and EW has an exclusive first look at a scene from the upcoming dramedy.

In the clip, Jack (Parks and Recreation‘s Ben Schwartz) arrives at a secluded mansion for a weekend getaway with his (much) younger girlfriend, Lola (Arrested Development‘s Alia Shawkat), and a gang of old friends. Though the group has gathered as a means to stage an intervention for the rocky marriage of Peter (Vincent Piazza) and Ruby (Cobie Smulders), Annie (Melanie Lynskey) questions whether or not their approach will be effective as long as Jack’s “baby stranger” of a love interest is tagging along.

DuVall premiered the film in January at the 2016 Sundance Film Festival, where it earned positive reviews and an individual performance award for star Melanie Lynskey. For her work on the film, DuVall was nominated for the festival’s Grand Jury Prize in the dramatic category.

“I knew I wanted to write a story about relationships. It’s a simple topic that is extraordinarily complicated, and never ceases to fascinate and challenge me. I had a loose idea based on my many years of experience as armchair quarter back for other people’s relationships,” DuVall’s director’s statement reads. “We all possess qualities of each of these characters. We all know what it feels like to be in a relationship, whether it’s with a friend, lover, family. It’s that kind of universality that I crave in a story. That’s what inspires me, what comforts me and makes me feel less alone. That’s what gives me hope. Those are gifts we all deserve. That’s why I wanted to make The Intervention.”
